From Farm to Fork
Being the first link in the pork supply chain, places JSR in a unique and important position. Firstly, we need to breed pigs that perform for the Producer and secondly, we need to breed pigs that produce pork of exceptional eating quality that delights the consumer.
For many years we have worked with all sections of the pork supply chain to help meet these two objectives. We have developed breeds and lines that allow our partners to gain a point of difference over their competitors. We design customised programmes that can then develop into supply chain partnerships.
The ‘Taste the Difference’ fresh pork partnership is one such example. Sainsbury’s challenged Cranswick to provide them with some of the best, improved eating quality pork. We designed a programme utilising the Hampshire breed as the sire line – but a special line producing superior eating quality which was developed commercially in conjunction with Dent Ltd, based in Cumbria. Dents and Cranswick worked closely together to produce a blue print to maintain consistency on a substantial volume of animals. The result has been greatly increased sales of the ‘Taste the Difference’ range of Fresh Pork through Sainsburys with Cranswick winning the BPEX Best Fresh Pork Cut category. This was achieved with the Outdoor Reared Hampshire bred Thick Cut Pork Chop product of the year in 2008. Dents also were awarded the Sainsbury Supplier of the Year in 2009 and also achieved Freedom Food status across their total supply base.
Another successful pig producing family is the Butlers based in Suffolk. They have built their own brand ‘Blythburgh Free Range Pork’. JSR supply the Genepacker 120 and the Geneconverter 600 (Titan) boar in this programme. It produces outdoor reared
free range pork and is also Freedom Food approved. This breed combination backed up by professional pig production skill, gives Blythburgh Free Range Pork customers exceptional eating quality. They too have won awards and endorsements. in 2005 Jimmy Butler won the first ever Farmer's Weekly PigFarmer of the Year Award. The award was given based on the achievements of Jimmy to create a sustainable pig farming concept, in which he truly understood his supply chain and customers that set him apart from the competition.
JSR believe that the route to success now and in the future is giving our pig producer customers an animal that performs on the ground and supplies the ultimate customer, the consumer high quality pork that delivers a first class eating experience every time!
